Antique and Vintage Furniture in Dubai: What to Show Before Selling

Wood-panelled room with a tufted sofa

For antique or vintage furniture in Dubai, photograph the individual piece, its construction, labels and known history before requesting an assessment. Decorative styling alone does not establish age, authenticity or value.

A general furniture buyer can assess reuse and resale suitability. A potentially rare or valuable item may need an independent specialist assessment before you accept an ordinary household offer.

Do not use the label as proof

“Antique”, “vintage” and “old” are used differently in advertisements. Describe what you know: where the piece came from, how long it has been in the family, any maker’s mark and any documentation.

If the age is unknown, say so. A carved surface, heavy frame or old-looking handle does not prove when something was made. Reproductions can also be attractive and well made, but should not be sold as authenticated antiques without evidence.

Photograph the details separately

  • The complete item from more than one angle.
  • Labels, stamps or maker’s marks.
  • Drawer interiors and construction where accessible.
  • Hardware, carving and inlay.
  • Damage, missing parts and earlier repairs.
  • Any useful provenance document, with unrelated private information covered.

Do not force a stuck drawer or turn a fragile piece upside down just for photos. Tell the assessor about inaccessible areas.

Pause before refinishing

For a potentially valuable piece, do not sand, paint or replace hardware simply to make it look newer. Original features can matter to collectors, and unsuitable work can change how the piece is assessed.

That does not mean every old finish is valuable or every restoration reduces the price. The right decision depends on the object. Get advice appropriate to the piece before spending on irreversible work.

For ordinary wooden furniture, our solid wood and veneer guide explains useful condition checks.

Keep a special piece visible in a household enquiry

If you are clearing a villa, do not let an unusual chest or cabinet disappear in one room photo. Identify it separately and explain whether you want an individual assessment.

A general lot offer may prioritise practical resale furniture rather than collectible value. Compare the available routes before treating that figure as a definitive appraisal.

Agree handling as well as price

Share dimensions, weight concerns, fragile parts and the route out. Do not assume the collection plan for an ordinary sofa is suitable for an inlaid cabinet or delicate chair.

Confirm the pieces, included accessories, inspection conditions and payment before collection. The valuation guide covers the general offer factors without pretending to authenticate antiques.

Common questions

Can a buyer authenticate an antique from a WhatsApp photo?

Photos can support an initial enquiry, but may not establish authenticity or age. Ask what expertise and inspection are needed for your piece.

Is all old solid wood valuable?

No. Condition, construction, design, rarity and demand can matter. Material and age alone are not an appraisal.

Can a reproduction be sold?

It can be assessed as furniture. Describe it accurately and do not make unsupported claims about provenance.

Ask about the piece before treating it as part of a lot

Send Al Madina separate detail photos. We can assess the furniture enquiry and clarify the scope. For a full property, see our villa clearance service and Dubai coverage.
